It took a lot of listening, looking at student writing, and then connecting that to the building blocks of argument and reasoning. They are shown how to critique their work as a reader would, thus eliminating possible sources of confusion. For this next step, I modeled argument writing for the class: we had a VTS discussion and then, just for the purposes of writing the model, we came to a class consensus about what students thought was happening in the picture.
